When a pet is gone, the photos you have can start to feel too few.

That does not mean you failed to take enough photos. It means you were there.

Recognition comes from the small things.

Not just the right breed. The details that made them yours.

A general portrait can resemble a dog, cat, rabbit, or bird. Recognition comes from the uneven marking, the shape of one ear, the older face, the posture, and the little look their person noticed every day.

The parts that were too ordinary to photograph.

You photographed the big days. You miss the ordinary ones.

The waiting by the door. The same place on the couch. The look toward the kitchen. The ordinary days did not seem like moments that needed documenting. They became the parts of the story people miss most.

Where they waited

The doorway, front window, stair landing, gate, or side of the bed they returned to every day.

How they looked at you

The head tilt, side-eye, lifted ear, open-mouth smile, or patient stare you knew immediately.

The place they always chose

The couch corner, kitchen threshold, garden bench, sunny floor, or favorite blanket.

That does not mean you failed to take enough photos. It means you were there.

The likeness-first process

New portraits built around the details that cannot change.

Phone photos are usually enough.

One photograph might show the face clearly. Another might show the markings. A third might hold the posture or expression you remember. They do not need to be professional. They need to show enough pieces for our artists to compare.

Every kind of companion

Not only dogs and cats.

Rabbits, birds, reptiles, cows, each one made from their own photos.

It actually looked like her: her exact markings, the way she tilted her head. I cried, then I printed it.

Liem with Lucy
Lucy walking toward the camera on a petal-covered path

From Liem

Why I started this

Lucy was a miniature schnauzer. I got her when she was still teething and chewing the corners of everything I owned. I had her for thirteen years.

She had a spot on the floor by the kitchen doorway where she could watch both rooms at once. That was where she waited for me. She did that every day for thirteen years, and I have four photos of it. My phone was in my hand for most of those days.

After she was gone, I went looking for a picture of her in that spot, waiting, the way I remembered her. I reached the end of what I had in under a minute.

I wasn't documenting her. I was with her. I picked up the camera when she did something unusual, and almost none of our life together was unusual. Most days she was just there, next to me. That's the part I miss.

Months later, I used one of those four photos to make a new picture of her. She was on a walk we never got to take, head up, ears doing the thing they did. I looked at it longer than I meant to. She looked like she'd been okay this whole time, off on adventures of her own, still herself.

I think she'd have liked it there.

Starting Still By My Side was my way of honoring Lucy.

If the photos you have feel too few, it isn't because you weren't paying attention. It's because you were.
